Admire the island’s oldest stone structure – and birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands – at the Pedro St. James National Historic Site. Take in the vibrant wetlands and gorgeous floral gardens of Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, home of endangered blue iguanas and Cayman parrots. Get a taste of one of the famous rums specially blended in Jamaica and Barbados on a rum distillery tour.
Cartagena, Colombia
Take a scenic drive through the residential area of Manga, and admire the beautiful mansions built in Republican-style architecture at the end of the 19th century. Explore the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fort that was once the most important military structure built in Latin America. Enjoy a boat ride to the Islas del Rosario, 26 coral islands located off the coast of Isla Barú, and continue to the island of San Martín de Pajarales to visit the aquarium. Enjoy a spectacular dolphin and shark show and other marine attractions there. Board the beautiful Spanish Galleon, a replica of a 17th-century sailing ship, for a cruise of the inner bay of Cartagena.
Puntarenas, Costa Rica
This small port city along Costa Rica’s west coast is a gateway to verdant mountains and abundant wildlife. Cruise the Tárcoles River, home to countless birds and a huge colony of crocodiles. Catch the rare opportunity to watch purebred Andalusian horses perform at a Costa Rican hacienda in the highlands of Puntarenas. Travel down the Pacific coast to observe Costa Rica’s famed scarlet macaws among the rainforests and mangroves of Carara National Park. While strolling the open-air cafes and boutiques of Paseo de los Turistas beside Puntarenas Beach, be sure to sample a ‘Churchill’, the Puntarenas version of a snow cone.
Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala
Drive into the mountains to beautiful old Antigua, once the country's colonial capital, and discover its lovely bougainvillea-draped buildings and breathtaking views of emerald volcanoes. Travel to famed Lake Atitlan and step back in time as you encounter the indigenous people in all their finery still living along the lakeshore. Whether you opt to explore the ancient Mayan history of the region or it’s more-recent colonial past, its architecture, culture and locals are sure to inspire.
Acapulco, Mexico
Long a playground for the rich and famous, this ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ is renowned for soaring cliffs, white-sand-rimmed bays and the Sierra Madre del Sur that cradles the city. Enjoy the iconic divers of La Quebrada from the terrace of La Perla restaurant at the landmark Hotel Mirador, cold drink in hand. Delve into Acapulco’s history at the five-pointed Fort of San Diego, an important stronghold during Spanish colonial rule. Wander El Zócalo, Acapulco's old town square, and the city’s world-class botanical garden. At one of many cliffside restaurants, try Acapulco favorite ceviche, a dish made of fresh, chopped raw fish tossed in peppers and lime juice.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
This popular resort city on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula offers dual experiences: the vibrant, bar-and-restaurant-filled ‘Cabo’, and quieter, more historic San José del Cabo. Once a sleepy fishing village, Cabo’s stretches of white-sand beach now draw vacationers from around the world. Playa El Médano is Cabo’s big draw, while the Land's End promontory features picturesque Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) and El Arco, an iconic natural archway in the sea cliffs. Take a drive to San José del Cabo to see a 17th-century Jesuit Mission, a bird-filled estuary and the Art District’s warm architecture, trendy cafes and galleries selling traditional Mexican artworks.
San Diego, California
The focus of San Diego seems to be ever changing, and each change adds to the city’s complexity and attractiveness. The city began as a remote Spanish mission and later came to be dominated by navy and marine bases. More recently, San Diego has established itself as a leader in scientific research and as a near perfect place to live, retire, conduct business or visit as a tourist. Its year-round perfect climate also helps lure people to its historic attractions.
Los Angeles, California
After the Jesuits built a series of missions along the coast of Alta California, the Spaniards established a port in 1781 as a supply stop for their coastal shipping routes. With the arrival of the transcontinental railroad and the discovery of oil, people began to arrive in droves. In 1923 the much-photographed giant letters were erected on the hill, and the golden age of Hollywood was born. The scale of Los Angeles, 90 miles long by 50 miles wide, defies belief.
