Step off at historic Plaza Mayor to view such highlights as the Government Palace, City Hall, Basilica Cathedral of Lima and the Archbishop’s Palace. Next, admire the baroque-style architecture of the San Francisco Monastery, considered to be the most important religious monument of Lima. Continue driving to the charming residential district of San Isidro and modern Miraflores, one of the most popular tourist districts in Lima.
San Francisco Monastery
A wonderful example of baroque-style architecture, the San Francisco Monastery has gilded side altars and a lattice dome. The adjoining monastery has a superb collection of ancient religious texts.
The Basilica Cathedral of Lima
Located in the Plaza Mayor, construction on this Roman Catholic cathedral, began in 1535. It is noted for its dramatic exterior dominated by two soaring towers and three massive gateways. Inside, find the choir stalls, the main altar and a statue of Christ made of carved ivory. On the right is the crypt with remains of conqueror Francisco Pizarro.
Settle into the motorcoach for a panoramic drive through Lima, the fifth largest city in Latin America and widely considered to be one of its most beautiful. Relax as the ever-changing panorama of city sights takes you back in time to the days of the Spanish conquistadors. The heart of Lima’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plaza Mayor is its main central square, and you’ll be treated to such sights as the Presidential Palace, City Hall and dramatic Lima Cathedral. Continue into the charming residential districts of San Isidro and modern Miraflores, with upscale retail, beautiful parks, and a six-mile stretch of boardwalk with cliff-top views of the Pacific Coast.
